RŌCA Salon & Spa
placed a strong focus on environmental factors while creating the new
state-of-the-art space. This began with the re-purposing of an all-brick
building which was originally built in 1946 as a neighborhood Safeway
grocery store.
The following are many of the ways we have incorporated a "green" approach
to our remodeling efforts, equipment, and products we use:
Green Technology / Construction:
•Energy-efficient computers throughout
•Web site powered by 100% wind energy
•Energy-efficient CFL and LED lighting inside and out
•Energy-efficient hand dryers in restrooms instead of paper towels
•Auto-shutoff blow dryers suspended from light platforms featuring
color-calibrated CFL lighting for perfect hair color rendition
•Energy star appliances:
1.High capacity front load washer and dryer
2.Refrigerator w/ icemaker
3.Dishwasher
4.Microwave
5.Beverage cooler
•Low-flow faucets & toilets
•4-Zone high-effenciency HVAC with programmable thermostats
•Pionite laminate surfaces with GREENGUARD® certification for being a
low-emitting product (meaning it doesn't give off harmful contaminants
into the air)
•White rooftop for seasonal temperature control
•"Open-cell" 8" blown insulation with an R50 rating which completely seals
the entire ceiling surface rendering it air tight.
•Restored and treated original cement floors
•All new plumbing from the street connect and throughout the building for
water efficiency
•Energy Star rated commercial ceiling fans for optimum seasonal airflow
Energy / Waste Conservation Efforts:
•Owners carpool together in their Prius hybrid car; many employees walk or
ride a bike to work; of those who drive, nearly all have fuel-efficient or
hybrid cars
•Some salon furnishings were recycled from a new salon in northern
California that was forced to close within less than 6 months of opening.
•Coffee mugs, water glasses, wine glasses, flatware & plates are used
instead of disposables
•Microfiber towels are used after shampooing to wick away excess water,
reducing blow-dry time as well as faster drying time in the laundry.
•Thermal carafe professional coffee maker instead of always-on electric
warming plate
•Recycle bin for recyclable waste
•All professional salon tools and transformers are completely powered off
each night
•Power strips on timers wherever possible, such as in treatment rooms
•Hair color is measured precisely to avoid waste
•Measure all product to be used for pedicures and facials into small
recycled-glass ramekins or ceramic saucers instead of plastic cups or
unsanitary common tubs
•Donate old magazines to local preschools
•Live plants produce oxygen and help balance out carbon dioxide emissions
Green Products:
•100% Bamboo spa linens (soft & silky)
•Cleaning supplies & laundry detergent
•Recycled / recyclable paper or plastic for most printing & shopping bags
•Professional products from green-initiative
