Calling All Curly Girls (and Guys)

Curly hair specialists at ROCA Salon & Soa
ROCA Salon & Spa is Kansas City's leader in naturally curly and wavy hair cutting and styling.

All hair is NOT created equal.  Curly hair, in all forms, requires special attention and a unique cutting approach to enhance each curl or wave.

Having trained in New York with Devachan Salons for Curly Hair, owner and stylist Rhonda has perfected her own blended technique of single-curl shaping which she calls "Dry Curl Sculpting".  Rhonda compares her technique to the art of pruning and shaping a bonsai tree, in that the overall shape of the style is dependent on the singular placement and length of each curl.  She has developed one of the largest curly-haired clientele for any one salon in the country.

FAQ

  • What is the difference in how ROCA Salon & Spa cuts curly hair, as opposed to other salons?
As stated above, Having trained in New York with Devachan Salons for Curly Hair, owner and stylist Rhonda has perfected her own individualized single-curl dry-cutting technique, which she calls "Curl Sculpting".

Rhonda compares her technique to the art of pruning and shaping a bonsai tree, in that the overall shape of the style is dependent on the singular placement and length of each curl.  She has trained several of our stylists in her unique dry-cutting method and has developed one of the largest curly-haired clientele for any one salon in the country.

  • Why does ROCA Salon & Spa cut curly hair dry?
Naturally curly hair does not curl evenly all over:  some curls on areas of the head are tighter or "springier" than other curls.  When the hair is wet and pulled taut, as in traditional cutting techniques, these variations to not appear.  Therefore, in order to achieve a perfectly balanced shape, dry-cutting allows for each curl to be cut where it naturally "lives" on the head.

  • What is the "Kanani  Curl Set" and how often should I follow it?
The Kanani Curl Set is a protocol of cleanse, hydrate, protect, and define, and is done as often as your curls require.  For some, the Kanani Curl Set protocol is a regular part of their daily routine and for others, once or twice a week is all it takes.

For most, this protocol results in curls which are more defined and less frizzy than ever before, from the very first time!  Even those with "straight" hair may discover a wave they never knew they had, similar to when they are on vacation in a tropical area.

We offer the Kanani Curl Set cleanse and styling protocol as an introduction and education to curly styling, for those who want to see how their hair will react with or without a cut.  The Kanani Curl Set is included complimentary with our signature dry curly cut.

  • Will the Kanani Curl Set work for individuals with permed curls instead of natural curls?
Once hair is permed, it is considered curly and must be treated with the same care as naturally curly hair.  Moisture is the key to success with curls so the more dehydrated, the more we encourage using our botanically infused and very moisturizing cleansers, conditioners and styling products.

  • My young child has curly hair.  Can I do the Kanani Curl Set with them?
Our superior products are 100% safe to use on your toddler and child.  We recommend the following cleansing and conditioning steps for usage on young children:

  1. Apply conditioner to dry curls before getting them wet, section by section. This can be soothing to the child and eliminates the more arduous task of pulling at tangles.

  2. Wet curls thoroughly. Massage a liberal amount of our recommended shampoo between palms and work vigorously throughout hair and scalp. Rinse well.

  3. If diffusing, apply our thermal protectant.

  4. Apply our recommended detangler to wet or dry curls and use fingers to gently remove any tangles or knots.
